“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword.” (Heb. 4:12a NASB)
A Christian university student was witnessing to another student who was from a liberal seminary. When the believer quoted a verse, the seminarian said, “I don’t believe the Bible.” The Christian quoted another verse, only to be met with “I told you I don’t believe the Bible.” The third time the Christian quoted a verse the seminarian became agitated and exploded, “Don’t quote the Bible to me. I’ve already told you I don’t believe it.” By then the believer felt completely frustrated and defeated. He figured that he was a total failure as a soul winner.
It so happened that Dr. H. A. Ironside was a guest at his home that night. At the supper table, the Christian student shared his disappointing experience about the seminarian. Then he asked Dr. Ironside, “When you are trying to witness to someone and he says to you, ‘I don’t believe the Bible,’ what do you do?” Dr. Ironside replied with a happy smile, “I just quote more of it.”
That is excellent advice for any would-be soul winners. When people say they don’t believe the Bible, just quote more of it. The Word of God is living and powerful. It has an effect on people even when they don’t believe it.
Suppose two men are dueling. One says to the other, “I don’t believe your sword is real steel.” What happens? Does the second man lay down his sword and admit defeat? Or does he give a scientific discourse on the carbon content and malleability of the metal? Ridiculous! He gives his opponent a good sharp jab and lets him feel how real the sword is. So it is with the Bible. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. It needs to be used more than it needs to be defended. It is well able to defend itself.
I do not deny that there is a place for proofs of the inspiration of the Scriptures. Such proofs serve a valuable purpose in confirming the faith of those who are already saved. In a few cases they help people come to saving faith. But generally speaking people aren’t convinced by human reasonings or arguments. “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.” Men need to be confronted with the powerful Word of God. A single verse of Scripture is worth a thousand arguments.
This highlights the importance of Scripture memorization. If I haven’t committed verses to memory, the Spirit will not be able to bring them forth at the appropriate time. But the main point is that God has not promised to honor my words, but He has promised to honor His own. So in dealing with the unsaved, I must use the sword of the Spirit generously and watch it produce conviction and conversion by a miracle of grace.

தேவனுடைய வார்த்தையானது ஜீவனும் வல்லமையும் உள்ளதாயும்¸ இருபுறமும் கருக்குள்ள எந்த பட்டயத்திலும் கருக்குள்ளதாயும் இருக்கிறது. (எபிரெயர் 4:12)
திருவசனமாகிய பட்டயம்
பல்கழக்கழகத்தில் பயிலும் ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவ மாணவன்¸ தாராளக் கொள்கையுடைய சமயக்கல்லூரியில் பயிலும் மற்ற மாணவனிடம் கிறிஸ்துவைக் குறித்துச் சாட்சி கூறிக் கொண்டிருந்தான். அந்த விசுவாசி வேதத்திலிருந்து ஒரு வசனத்தை எடுத்துக் கூறிய போது¸ சமயக்கல்லூரி மாணவன்¸ ‘நான் வேதத்தை நம்புவதில்லை” என்று பதிலுரைத்தான். கிறிஸ்தவன் மற்றொரு வசனத்தைக் கூறியபோது அதே பதிலைப் பெற்றான். அடுத்தமுறை கிறிஸ்தவன் ஒரு வசனத்தைச் சொன்னவுடன் வெகுண்டெழுந்த சமயக்கல்லூரி மாணவன்¸ ‘வேதாகமத்திலிருந்து வசனத்தை என்னிடம் எடுத்துக் கூறாதே¸ அதை நான் நம்புவதில்லை என்று ஏற்கனவே உன்னிடம் கூறினேன் அல்லவா” என்று சத்தமிட்டான். கிறிஸ்தவ இளைஞன்¸ தன்னால் ஆத்தம ஆதாயம் செய்ய இயலவில்லை என்ற கவலை மேலிட்டவனாக முற்றிலும் தோல்வி மனப்பான்மையுற்றான்.
அந்த நாள் இரவிலே அக்கிறிஸ்தவனுடைய இல்லத்திற்கு முனைவர் H. A. அயன்சைடு அவர்கள் விருந்தினராக வருகைபுரிந்தார். உணவருந்தும்போது அவ்விளைஞன் அவனது அனுபவத்தை விருந்தினரோடு பகிர்ந்துகொண்டு இப்படிப்பட்ட சு10ழ்நிலையில் என்ன செய்வது என்று வினவினான். அயன்சைடு அவர்கள்¸ “இவ்விதச் சூழ்நிலையில் நான் அதிகமதிகமாக வசனங்களைக் கூறுவேன்” என்று பதிலுரைத்தார்.
ஆத்தம ஆதாயம் செய்ய விரும்புகிறவருக்கு இது மிகச்சிறந்த ஆலோசனையாக இருக்கிறது. வேதத்தை நம்பவில்லையென்று யாராவது சொல்லுவார்களென்றால் கூடுதலாக வசனங்களை எடுத்துரையுங்கள். தேவனுடைய எழுத்துக்கள் ஜீவனுள்ளவை. வல்லமை பொருந்தியவை¸ மற்றவர்கள் அதை நம்பவில்லையெனினும் அது பயன் விளைவிக்கக் கூடியதாக இருக்கிறது.
இரண்டு மனிதர்கள் வாள்கொண்டு மோதுகிறார்கள் எனக்கொள்வோம். ஒருவன் மற்றவனிடம்¸ ‘உன்னுடைய வாள் உண்மையானது என்று நம்பவில்லை” என்று சொல்வானாயின்¸ மற்றவன் தன்னுடைய வாளைக் கீழே வைத்துவிட்டுது தோல்வியை ஒப்புக்கொள்ள மாட்டான். தன்னுடைய வாளின் இரும்பில் எத்தனை சதவிகிதம் கரி கலந்திருக்கிறது என்று ஆராச்சி செய்யவும் சொல்லமாட்டான். அவ்வாறு செய்வது முட்டாள்தனமானது! தனது வாளால் எதிரியை ஓங்கிக் குத்தி அது எவ்வளவு கூர்மையானது என்பதைப் புலப்படச் செய்வான். வேதமும் அதற்கொப்பானதே. அது ஆவியின் பட்டயமாகும். வேதத்தைக் காப்பதற்காக நாம் எதுவும் செய்ய வேண்டியதில்லை. அதனை நாம் அதிகமாக பயன்படுத்தவே வேண்டும். வேதம் தன்னைத்தான் காத்துக்கொள்ளப் பலம் வாய்ந்ததாகும்.
தேவ ஆவியால் ஏவப்பட்டு எழுதப்பட்டதே வேதம் என்பதற்குச் சான்று தேவை என்பதை நான் மறுக்கவில்லை. ஏற்கனவே இரட்சிக்கப்பட்ட மக்கள் தங்களது நம்பிக்கையில் உறுதிபெற அந்தச் சான்றுகள் உதவிபுரிகின்றன. சில வேளைகளில் சிலர் இரட்சிப்பைப் பெறவும் அவை வழிநடத்துகின்றன. பொதுவாக¸ மனிதர்கள் கூறும் காரண காரிய விளக்கங்களைப் பலர் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதில்லை. ‘தன்னுடைய சுயசித்ததிற்கு மாறாக நம்பவைக்கப்பட்டவன் தனது முந்தைய கருத்தை மாற்றிக் கொள்வதில்லை.” தேவனுடைய வல்லமையுள்ள வார்த்தைகளால் மனிதன் தாக்கப்பட வேண்டும். வேதத்தில் காணும் ஒரு வசனம் ஆயிரம் வாதங்களைக் காட்டிலும் மேலானது.
வேத வசனங்களை மனப்பாடம் செய்வதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை இது சிறப்பித்துக் காட்டுகிறது. வசனங்களை நான் மனப்பாடம் செய்திராவிடில் ¸ தேவையான நேரத்தில் எங்ஙனம் தேவ ஆவியானவர் அவற்றை எனது நினைவிற்குக் கொண்டு வருவார்? நம்முடைய வார்த்தையை கனம்பண்ணுவதாக அவர் வாக்களிக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் தம்முடைய வார்த்தையைக் கனம் பண்ணுவதாகவே கூறியுள்ளார். ஆகவே அவிசுவாசிகளோடு ஈடுபடும் போது ஆவியின் பட்டயத்தைத் தாராளமாக நாம் பயன்படுத்தி¸ அது கண்டித்துணர்த்தி கிருபையின் அற்புதத்தால் மனமாற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவதைக் காண விழைவோம்.

Ein gläubiger Student gab einmal einem liberalen Theologiestudenten Zeugnis. Als der Christ einen Bibelvers zitierte, antwortete der Theologe: »Ich glaube nicht an die Bibel.« Der Gläubige zitierte einen anderen Vers, nur um zur Antwort zu bekommen: »Ich habe dir schon gesagt, dass ich der Bibel nicht glaube.« Als der Christ den dritten Bibelvers zitierte, explodierte der Theologiestudent mit den Worten: »Ich will keine Bibelzitate von dir hören. Ich habe dir bereits gesagt, dass ich nicht daran glaube.« An diesem Punkt fühlte sich der Gläubige total frustriert und
besiegt. Er hielt sich für einen völligen Versager als Seelengewinner.
Nun war aber gerade am Abend dieses Tages Dr. H.A. Ironside bei seiner Familie zu Gast. Beim Abendessen erzählte ihm der Student sein enttäuschendes Erlebnis mit dem Theologiestudenten. Dann fragte er Dr. Ironside: »Wenn Sie jemand Zeugnis geben und er ihnen antwortet: ›Ich glaube nicht an die Bibel‹, was machen Sie dann?« Dr. Ironside antwortete mit einem seligen Lächeln: »Ich zitiere einfach noch mehr.«
Dies ist ein ausgezeichneter Rat für alle zukünftigen Seelengewinner. Wenn dir die Menschen sagen, dass sie der Bibel nicht glauben, dann zitiere einfach weiter aus ihr.
Das Wort Gottes ist lebendig und wirksam. Es verfehlt nie seine Wirkung bei den Menschen, auch wenn sie es nicht glauben.
Stellen wir uns vor, zwei Männer befinden sich im Zweikampf. Nun sagt der eine zum anderen: »Ich glaube nicht, dass dein Schwert wirklich aus Stahl ist.« Was passiert? Wirft der andere sein Schwert weg und kapituliert? Oder hält er einen wissenschaftlichen Vortrag über den Karbongehalt und die Schmiedbarkeit von Metall? Das wäre mehr als lächerlich! Nein, er versetzt seinem Gegner einen tüchtigen schnellen Stoß und lässt ihn spüren, wie echt das Schwert ist. So ist es auch mit der Bibel. Das Wort Gottes ist das Schwert des Geistes. Es muss hauptsächlich gebraucht, nicht so sehr verteidigt werden. Es kann sich selber recht gut verteidigen.
Ich möchte hier nicht abstreiten, dass Beweise für die Inspiration der Heiligen Schrift durchaus ihren Sinn haben. Solche Beweise dienen zum einen dem wichtigen Zweck, den Glauben derer zu festigen, die bereits gerettet sind. In einigen wenigen Fällen helfen sie auch Menschen, zum rettenden Glauben zu kommen. Aber im Allgemeinen werden die Menschen nicht durch menschliche Argumente und Schlussfolgerungen überzeugt. »Ein Mensch, gegen seinen Willen zur Überzeugung gedrängt, meist immer noch seiner alten Meinung anhängt.« Die Menschen müssen
mit dem kraftvollen Wort Gottes konfrontiert werden. Ein einziger Bibelvers ist oft mehr wert als tausend Argumente.
Dies macht auch die Wichtigkeit des Auswendiglernens von Bibelversen deutlich. Wenn ich meinem Gedächtnis keine Verse anvertraut habe, kann sie der Geist auch nicht im entscheidenden Augenblick hervorholen. Der wichtigste Punkt ist aber, dass Gott nicht verheißen hat, meine Worte zu ehren, sondern das Seine. Wenn ich also mit Unbekehrten umgehe, muss ich freimütig das Schwert des Geistes gebrauchen und zusehen, wie es durch ein Wunder der Gnade Überführung und Überzeugung hervorbringt.
