“…whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?” (Mt. 23:17)
The scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day taught that if a man swore by the Temple, he wasn’t necessarily obligated to do what he promised. But if he swore by the gold of the Temple, then that was a different story. He was bound by that oath. They made the same false distinction between swearing by the altar and swearing by the sacrifice on it. The former oath could be broken; the latter was binding.
The Lord told them that their sense of values was completely twisted. It is the Temple that gives the gold special value, and it is the altar that sets apart the sacrifice in a special way.
The Temple was the dwelling place of God on earth. The highest honor that any gold could have was to be used in that dwelling. Its connection with the House of God set it apart in a unique way. So it was with the altar and the sacrifice on it. The altar was an integral part of the divine service. No animal could be more highly honored than to be sacrificed on the altar. If animals could have ambitions, they would have all aimed for that destiny.
A tourist bought an inexpensive amber necklace in a secondhand shop in Paris. He became curious when he had to pay heavy customs in New York. He went to a jeweler to have it appraised and was offered $25,000. A second jeweler offered $35,000. When he asked why it was so valuable, the jeweler put it under a magnifying glass. The tourist read, “From Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine.” It was the name of Napoleon that made the necklace so valuable.
The application should be clear. In ourselves we are nothing and can do nothing. It is our association with the Lord and with His service that sets us apart in a special way. As Spurgeon said, “Your connection with Calvary is the most wonderful thing about you.”
You may have an unusually brilliant mind. That is something to be thankful for. But remember this. It is only as that mind is used for the Lord Jesus Christ that it ever reaches its highest destiny. It is Christ that sanctifies your intellect.
You may have talents for which the world is willing to pay a high price. You may even think that the Church is too insignificant for them. But it is the Church that sanctifies your talents, and not your talents that sanctify the Church.
You may have bundles of money. You can hoard it, spend it on self-indulgence, or use it for the Kingdom. The greatest use to which it can be put is to spend it in furthering the cause of Christ. It is the Kingdom that sanctifies your wealth, not vice versa.

எது முக்கியம்? பொன்னோ, பொன்னைப் பரிசுத்தமாக்குகிற தேவாலயமோ? (மத்.23:17)
தேவாலயத்தின்பேரில் சத்தியம் பண்ணுகிறவன் தனது ஆணையை நிறைவேற்ற வேண்டியதில்லையென்றும், தேவாலயத்தின் பொன்னின்பேரில் சத்தியம்பண்ணுகிறவன் தனது ஆணையை நிறைவேற்றக் கடனாளியாக இருக்கிறான் என்றும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து கிறிஸ்துவின் நாட்களில் வாழ்ந்த வேதபாரகரும் பரிசேயரும் கற்பித்தனர். பலிபீடம் மற்றும் காணிக்கை ஆகியவற்றின்பேரில் சத்தியம் பண்ணுகிறதிலும் இதேபோன்று தவறான போதனையை அவர்கள் கற்பித்தனர். பலிபீடத்தின்பேரில் இடுகிற ஆணையைச் செய்யவேண்டியதில்லை, ஆனால் காணிக்கையின் பேரில் இடுகிற ஆணையைத் தவறாமல் நிறைவேற்றவேண்டும் என்பது அவர்கள் வாதம்.
அவர்கள் மதிப்பிடும் முறை முற்றிலும் தவறானது என்று கர்த்தர் எடுத்துரைத்தார். தேவாலயமே பொன்னிற்குச் சிறப்பளிக்கிறது. அதுபோலவே பலிபீடமே காணிக்கைக்கச் சிறப்பளிக்கிறது.
இவ்வுலகில் தேவன் வாசம்செய்யம் இடமாக தேவாலயம் இருந்தது. அவ்விடத்தில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட பொன்னோ எல்லாப் பொன்னிலும் மிகவும் மேன்மையான கனத்தைப் பெற்றது. அது தேவனுடைய வீட்டோடு கொண்டிருந்த சம்பந்தத்தினால், அத்தனிச் சிறப்பைப் பெற்றது. அதுபோன்றே காணிக்கை பலிபீடத்தினால் சிறப்பு பெற்றது. பலிபீடம் தெய்வீக ஆராதனையின் அங்கமாகத் திகழ்ந்தது. எந்தவொரு விலங்கும் அதில் பலியிடப்படுவதைப் பார்க்கிலும் மேலான கனத்தைப் பெறமுடியாது. விலங்குகள் அவற்றின் வாழ்க்கையில் சில நோக்கங்களை உடையவையாக இருந்திருக்குமானால் அவ்வாறு பலியிடப்படுவதையே விரும்பியிருக்கும்.
பாரிஸ் நகரக் கடைவீதியில் மஞ்சள் நிறக் கற்கள் பதித்த பழைய ஆரம் ஒன்றைக் குறைந்த விலைக்கு ஒரு பயணி வாங்கினான். தனது நாட்டிற்குத் திரும்பிச் சென்றவனுக்கு அதிர்ச்சி காத்திருந்தது. நியூயார்க் சுங்க அதிகாரிகள் பெரும் பணத்தை வரியாக வசூலித்தனர். அந்த ஆரத்தின் மதிப்பை அறிய விரும்பினபோது அதன் மதிப்பு 25000 டாலர் என்று ஒரு நகைக்கடையிலும் அடுத்த கடையில் 35000 டாலர் என்றும் கூறினர். “ஜோசபைனுக்கு நெப்போலியன் போனபார்ட்டின் அன்பளிப்பு” என்று கண்ணுக்குப் புலப்படாத சிறிய எழுத்துக்கள் அந்த ஆரத்தில் பொறிக்கப்பட்டிருந்ததே அதன் விலைமதிப்பிற்குக் காரணம் என்பதை அவன் பின்னரே அறிந்துகொண்டான். நெப்போலியனுடன் கொண்ட தொடர்பினால் அந்த ஆரம் சிறப்பு பெற்றது.
இதிலிருந்து நாம் அறிவது யாது? நாம் ஒன்றிற்கம் தகுதிபடைத்தவர் அல்லர். ஒன்றையும் நாமாகச் செய்ய இயலாதவர். கர்த்தரோடு நாம் கொண்டிருக்கிற ஐக்கியமும், அவருடைய உழியத்தோடு நாம் வகிக்கும் பங்கும் நம்மைத் தனிச் சிறப்பு அடையச்செய்கின்றன. “கல்வாரியோடு நீங்கள் கொண்டுள்ள தொடர்பு உங்களைப் பற்றிய மிகவும் வியத்தகு மேன்மையாகும்” என்று ஸ்பர்ஜன் கூறியுள்ளார்.
அசாதாரண வகையில் நீங்கள் புத்திகூர்மை உடையவராக அருக்கலாம். அதற்காக நீங்கள் நன்றி செலுத்தக் கடமைப்பட்டவர் ஆவீர். கர்த்தராகிய இயேசுகிறிஸ்துவிற்காக நீங்கள் அதனைப் பயன்படுத்தாதவரை, அதனுடைய மிக உயர்ந்த மேன்மையை அது அடையாது என்பதை நினைவிற்கொள்ளுங்கள். கிறிஸ்துவே உங்களுடைய அறிவைப் பரிசுத்தப்படுத்துகிறார்.
உங்களுடைய திறமையைப் கண்டு இவ்வுலகம் அதற்குப் பெரிய விலையைக் கொடுக்கலாம். இவ்வுலகம் சபையை அறியாது. ஆனால் அந்தச் சபையே உங்களது திறமையைப் பரிசுத்தப்படுத்தகிறது. உங்களது திறமை சபையைப் பரிசுத்தப்படுத்துவதில்லை.
நீங்கள் பணத்தைச் சேமித்து வைக்கலாம். அல்லது உங்களுடைய சொந்த நலனுக்காகச் செலவிடலாம். அல்லது இறை அரசிற்காகச் செலவிடலாம். கிறிஸ்துவின் நோக்கம் நிறைவேறுவதற்காக நீங்கள் அதைப் பயன்படுத்துவதே அதன் மிகச்சிறந்த பயனாகும். இறை அரசே அச்செல்வத்தைப் பரிசுத்தப்படுத்துகிறது. செல்வம் இறை அரசைப் பரிசுத்தப்படுத்துவதில்லை.

»Denn was ist größer, das Gold oder der Tempel, der das Gold heiligt?« Matthäus 23,17
Die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer zur Zeit Jesu dachten, dass jemand, der beim Tempel schwor, nicht unbedingt verpflichtet war, seine Versprechungen einzuhalten. Wenn er aber beim Gold des Tempels geschworen hatte, so glaubten sie, war es etwas völlig anderes. Dann war der Betreffende durch den Eid gebunden. Die gleiche absurde Unterscheidung machten sie zwischen dem Schwören bei dem Altar und dem Schwören bei der Opfergabe darauf. Ersterer Eid konnte gebrochen werden, letzterer war bindend.
Der Herr sagte ihnen, dass ihr Wertsystem völlig verdreht war. Es ist der Tempel, der dem Gold besonderen Wert verleiht, und der Altar, der die Opfergabe in besonderer Weise hervorhebt.
Der Tempel war der Wohnort Gottes auf Erden. Der höchste Zweck, zu dem Gold auf der Erde verwendet werden konnte, war der Gebrauch in diesem Wohnort. Seine Verbindung mit dem Haus Gottes verlieh ihm besonderen und einzigartigen Wert. Ebenso war es auch mit dem Altar und der Gabe darauf. Der Altar war ein integrer Teil des Gottesdienstes. Kein Tier konnte zu einem edleren Zweck gebraucht werden, als ein Opfer auf dem Altar zu werden.
Wenn Tiere Ambitionen hätten, dann hätten sie sich alle dieses Schicksal gewünscht.
Ein Tourist kaufte in einem Antiquitätenladen in Paris eine preisgünstige Bernstein-Halskette. Er wurde neugierig, als er am Zoll in New York eine hohe Summe entrichten musste. Darum ging er zu einem Juwelier, um sie schätzen zu lassen, und man bot ihm dafür 25000 Dollar. Ein zweiter Juwelier bot 35000 Dollar. Als der Tourist fragte, warum die Halskette so wertvoll war, hielt sie der Juwelier unter ein Vergrößerungsglas. Dort war zu lesen: »Für Josephine von Napoleon Bonaparte.« Der Name Napoleons machte die Halskette so wertvoll.
Die Anwendung sollte klar sein. In uns selbst sind wir nichts und können nichts tun. Es ist unsere Verbindung mit dem Herrn und mit Seinem Dienst, der uns so besonders wertvoll macht. Spurgeon hat gesagt: »Deine Verbindung mit Golgatha ist das Wunderbarste und Kostbarste an dir.«
Vielleicht haben wir einen außergewöhnlich brillanten Intellekt. Dafür dürfen wir dankbar sein. Doch sollten wir eines dabei nie vergessen: Nur wenn dieser Intellekt für Christus verwendet wird, erreicht er seine höchste Bestimmung. Christus ist es, der unseren Intellekt heiligt.
Vielleicht haben wir Talente, für welche die Welt einen hohen Preis zu zahlen bereit ist. Wir können vielleicht sogar denken, dass die Gemeinde dafür zu unbedeutend ist. Aber es ist die Gemeinde, die unsere Talente heiligt, und nicht unsere Talente die Gemeinde.
Vielleicht haben wir Geld im Überfluss. Wir können es horten, für unser persönliches Vergnügen verschwenden oder aber für das Reich Gottes verwenden. Die wertvollste Verwendung, der es zugeführt werden kann, ist die Förderung der Sache Christi. Es ist das Reich Gottes, das unseren Reichtum heiligt, nicht umgekehrt.
