“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” (1 Sam. 15:22)
God’s instructions to King Saul were clear enough. Slay the Amalekites and destroy all their possessions. All of them. Don’t take any spoil. But Saul spared King Agag and the choicest of the sheep, oxen, fatlings and lambs.
When Samuel met Saul in the morning at Gilgal, Saul confidently announced that he had done exactly what the Lord commanded. But at that very moment, a barnyard choir began its oratorio-sheep bleating and oxen lowing. Very embarrassing!
Samuel wanted to know, of course, how the sheep were bleating if Saul had killed them all. The King then tried to cover his disobedience by blaming the people and by excusing them on religious grounds. He said, “The people spared the best of the sheep and oxen to sacrifice to the Lord.”
It was then he heard God’s prophet thunder out the convicting words, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.”
Obedience is more important than rituals, sacrifices and offerings. I heard once of a family who treated their mother with cool contempt and disobedience during her lifetime. But when she died, they dressed her corpse in a Dior original. A despicable and futile attempt to atone for years of rebellion and discourtesy!
We often hear people defending an unscriptural position or unscriptural associations on the ground that they can have a wider influence in this way. But God is not deceived by such specious rationalizations. He wants our obedience—He will take care of our sphere of influence. The truth is that when we are disobedient, our influence is negative. Only when we are walking in fellowship with the Lord can we exert a godly influence on others.
William Gurnall said, “Sacrifice without obedience is sacrilege.” And it becomes even worse when we cloke our disobedience with some pious, religious excuse. God is not hoodwinked.

பலியைப் பார்க்கிலும் கீழ்ப்படிதலும், ஆட்டுக்கடாக்களின் நிணத்தைப் பார்க்கிலும் செவிகொடுத்தலும் உத்தமம். (1.சாமு.15:22).
அரசனாகிய சவுலுக்கு தேவன் கொடுத்த கட்டளைகள் மிகத்தெளிவாக இருந்தன. அமலேக்கியரும் அவர்களுடைய உடமைகள் யாவும் அழிக்கப்படவேணஇடும். அந்த உடமைகளைக் கொள்ளைப் பொருட்களாகக் கொள்ளாமல், ஒன்றுவிடாமல் எலஇலாம் அழிக்கப்படவேண்டும். ஆனால் நடந்தது என்ன? அரசனாகிய ஆகாகையும் முதல் தரமான மந்தையையும் கொல்லாமல் சவுல் விட்டுவைத்தான்.
அடுத்தநாள் காலையில் சாமுவேல் சவுலைக் கில்காலில் சந்தித்தபோது, தான் கர்த்தருடைய சொற்களின்படி அனைத்தையும் செய்துமுடித்ததாக சவுல் உறுதியுடன் பதிலுரைத்தான். ஆனால் அதே நேரத்தில் கொல்லைப்புறத்திலிருந்து இன்னிசைப்பாடல் ஒலித்தது. ஆடுகளும் மாடுகளும் சத்தமிட்டன. சவுலுக்கு இக்கட்டான சூழ்நிலை.
எல்லா மந்தையையும் சவுல் கொன்றுபோட்டிருந்தால், எங்ஙனம் ஆடு சத்தமிடும் என்பதே சாமுவேலின: கேள்வி. சவுலோ, தனது கீழ்ப்படியாமையை மறைக்க முயற்சி செய்தான், மக்களைக் குறைகூறினான், சமயப்பற்றின் அடிப்படையில் காரணங்கள் கூறினான். “ஜனங்கள் ஆடுமாடுகளில், நலமானவைகளை உம்முடைய தேவனாகிய கர்த்தருக்குப் பலியிடும்படிக்குத் தப்பவைத்தார்கள்” என்பதே அவன் உரைத்த பதில்.
அதன்பிறகே, “பலியைப் பார்க்கிலும் கீழ்ப்படிதலும், ஆட்டுக்கடாக்களின் நிணத்தைப் பார்க்கிலும் செவிகொடுத்தலும் உத்தமம். இரண்டகம் பண்ணுதல் பில்லி சூனிய பாவத்திற்கும், முரட்டாட்டம் பண்ணுதல் அவபக்திக்கும் விக்கிரகாராதனைக்கும் சரியாய் இருக்கிறது” என்று தேவனுடைய தீர்க்கதரிசி இடிமுழக்கமெனக் கடிந்துரைத்தான்.
சடங்குகள், பலிகள், காணிக்கைகள் யாவற்றையும் விடக் கீழ்ப்படிதல் மிகவும் இன்றியமையாதது. தங்களுடைய தாயார் வாழ்ந்த நாட்களில், அவருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியாமல் ஏளனமாய் நடத்தின பிள்ளைகள் சிலரை எனக்குத் தெரியும். அவர்கள் தங்களுடைய தாயைப் பல ஆண்டுகள் எதிர்த்து நின்று அவமதித்தனர். ஆனால், அந்தத் தாய் இறந்தபோது, சரீரத்தை ஆடம்பரமாக அலங்கரித்தனர். அவர்கள் செய்த பாவத்திற்குப் பரிகாரம் தேடி அவர்கள் செய்த இச்செய்கை பயனற்றதும் வெறுக்கத்தக்கதுமாயிருக்கிறது.
வேதத்திற்க முரணான பதவியையும், நண்பர்களையும் கொண்டிருப்போர் அது சரியானதே என்றும், அதன் வாயிலாக பரந்த செல்வாக்கை அடையலாம் என்றும் வாதிடுவார்கள். பகுத்திறவுபோலத் தோன்றும் இப்படிப்பட்ட வாதங்களால் தேவன் ஏமாறமாட்டார். நமது கீழ்ப்படிதலையே அவர் விரும்புகிறார். நமக்கு எங்கே செல்வாக்கு வேண்டும் என்பதை அவர் அறிவார். உண்மை யாதெனில் நமது கீழ்ப்படியாத செயல்கள், நமது செல்வாக்கு ஆகியவை எதிரான விளைவுகளையே உண்டாக்கும். நமது கர்த்தரோடு ஐக்கியம் கொண்டவர்களாக நாம் நடப்பது மற்றவர்களிடம் தெய்வீகத் தன்மையுள்ள விளைவுகளை உண்டாக்கும்.
“கீழ்ப்படியாமல் செலுத்துகிற காணிக்கைகள் தீட்டானவை” என்று வில்லியம் கார்னர் என்பார் கூறியுள்ளார். பக்தி, சமயம் ஆகிய காரணங்களைக் கூறி நமது கீழ்ப்படியாமையை மறைக்க முயன்றால் நமது பலிகள் இன்னும் கீழ்த்தரமானதாகக் காணப்படும். தேவன் கண்களை மூடிக்கொள்வதில்லை.

Gottes Anweisungen für König Saul waren klar: Erschlage die Amalekiter und vernichte all ihren Besitz. Alles, ohne Ausnahme. Mach keine Beute. Aber Saul verschonte König Agag und die jeweils besten Schafe, Ochsen, Mastkälber und Lämmer. Als Samuel Saul am Morgen in Gilgal begegnete, verkündete Saul selbstbewusst, dass er genau das getan habe, was der Herr befohlen hatte. Aber in diesem Augenblick stimmte ein »Stallchor« sein Oratorium an – Schafe blökten, und Ochsen brüllten. Äußerst peinlich!
Samuel wollte natürlich wissen, warum die Schafe blökten, wenn Saul sie alle getötet hatte. Der König versuchte daraufhin seinen Ungehorsam zu verschleiern, indem er dem Volk die Schuld gab und es gleichzeitig unter einem religiösen Vorwand entschuldigte. Er sagte: »Aber das Volk hat von der Beute genommen: Schafe und Rinder, das Beste vom Gebannten, um es dem Herrn, deinem Gott, in Gilgal zu opfern.«
In diesem Augenblick schleuderte ihm der Prophet Gottes die schneidenden Worte ins Gesicht: »Siehe, Gehorchen ist besser als Schlachtopfer, und Aufmerken besser als das Fett der Widder. Denn wie Sünde der Wahrsagerei ist Widerspenstigkeit, und der Eigenwille wie Abgötterei und Götzendienst. «
Gehorsam ist wichtiger als Rituale, Opfer und Gaben. Ich hörte einmal von einer Familie, die ihre Mutter mit kühler Verachtung und Ungehorsam behandelte, solange sie lebte. Als sie aber starb, kleidete man ihren Leichnam in einem echten Dior-Kostüm. Ein verachtenswerter und vergeblicher Versuch, Jahre der Rebellion und Respektlosigkeit wieder gutzumachen!
Oft hört man, wie Menschen ihre unschriftgemäßen Auffassungen oder unschriftgemäßen Verbindungen damit verteidigen, dass sie dadurch angeblich mehr Einfluss ausüben können. Doch Gott lässt sich durch solche Scheinargumente nicht betrügen. Er will unseren Gehorsam – um unseren Einfluss kümmert Er sich schon. In Wirklichkeit ist es so, dass unser Einfluss dann negativ ist, wenn wir ungehorsam sind. Nur wenn wir in Gemeinschaft mit dem Herrn wandeln, können wir auf andere einen Einfluss im Sinne Gottes ausüben.
William Gurnall sagte einmal: »Opfer ohne Gehorsam ist Frevel.« Und es ist noch weitaus schlimmer, wenn wir unseren Ungehorsam mit einem frommen religiösen Vorwand tarnen. Gott lässt sich nicht hinters Licht führen.
