“If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” (John 13:17)
Those who teach and preach the Christian faith should practice what they preach. They should present to the world a living example of the truth. The will of God is that the Word should become flesh in the lives of His people.
The world is more impressed by action than by talk. Wasn’t it Edgar Guest who wrote, “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one any day”? And there is the well-known jibe, “What you are speaks so loud, I can’t hear what you say!”
It was said of one preacher that when he was in the pulpit, the people wished he would never leave it; but when he was out of the pulpit, the people wished he would never enter it again.
H. A. Ironside said, “Nothing locks the lips like the life.” In similar vein, Henry Drummond wrote, “The man is the message.” Carlyle added his testimony: “Holy living is the best argument that tells for God in an age of fact…Words have weight when they have a man behind them.” E. Stanley Jones said, “The Word has to become flesh in us before it can become power through us.” “If I preach the right thing but do not live it, I am telling an untruth about God,” said Oswald Chambers.
Of course we know that the Lord Jesus Christ is the only One who perfectly embodies what He teaches. There is absolutely no contradiction between His message and His life. When the Jews asked Him, “Who are you?” He replied, “Just what I have been claiming all along” (John 8:25 NIV). His conduct corresponded to His claims. Ours should do so increasingly.
Two brothers were doctors, one a preacher and the other an M.D. One day a troubled woman came to see the preacher, but she was not sure which of the doctors lived there. When the preacher opened the door, she asked, “Are you the doctor who preaches or the one who practices?” The question impressed him afresh with the necessity of being a living example of what he taught.

நடக்கையினால் உண்டாகும் பலன்
கிறிஸ்தவப் பற்றுறுதியைக் குறித்துப் போதிக்கிறவர்களும், பிரசங்கிக்கிறவர்களும் தாங்கள் பிரசங்கிக்கிறவற்றிற்கு ஏற்ப நடந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும். உண்மையை வாழ்ந்து காட்டும் எடுத்துக்காட்டுக்களாக இவ்வுலகில் அவர்கள் திகழ வேண்டியது இன்றியமையாததாகும். தமது மக்களுடைய வாழ்க்கையில், வார்த்தை மாம்சமாக வெளிப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதே தேவனுடைய சித்தமாகும்.
‘பேச்சினால் அன்று, செயலினாலேயே இந்த உலகம் மிகுதியான தாக்கம் அடைகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் பிரசங்கத்தைக் கேட்க அல்ல, பார்க்கவே விரும்புகிறேன்” என்று எட்கார் கெஸ்ட் என்பவர் எழுதவில்லையா? ‘உங்களது நடத்தையே சத்தமாய்ப் பேசுகிறது. நீங்கள் பேசும் வார்த்தைகள் எனக்குக் கேட்கிறதில்லை”என்னும் இடித்துரைக்கும் கூற்றை நாம் நன்கு அறிவோமே!
ஒரு பிரசங்கியார் மேடையில் இருக்கும் போது, அவர் அங்கிருந்து போகக் கூடாது என்று சபை மக்கள் கருதும் அளவிற்கு இனிமையாகப் பேசுவார். ஆயின் அவர் மேடையை விட்டு இறங்கிய பிறகு அவரைக் காண்போர், அவர் ஒருக்காலும் மேடைக்குச் செல்லக்கூடாது என்று எண்ணுவர். அவருடைய நடத்தை அவ்வளவு தகாததாயிருக்கும்.

A. அயன்சைடு அவர்கள், ‘நல்லதொரு வாழ்க்கையைப் போல வேறெதுவும் மற்றவர்களுடைய நாவை கட்டிவைப்பதில்லை” எனக்கூறியுள்ளார். ‘மனிதனே செய்தியாக இருக்கிறான்” என ஹென்றி டிரமண்டு என்பார் அதே கருத்தினை வலியுறுத்துகிறார். கார்லைல் என்பார் தமது சாட்சியை வழங்குகிறார், ‘உண்மைச் செய்திகளை நாடும் உலகிற்கு, பரிசுத்த வாழ்க்கையே வலுவான வாதமாக இருக்கிறது. சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ள வார்த்தைகளுக்கு உண்மையான விளங்கும் மனிதர் இருப்பானாயின், அவனுடைய சொற்கள் வலிமையுடையவைகளாகும்” ‘வார்த்தைகள் நம்மிடத்திலிருந்து வல்லமையாக வெளிப்பட வேண்டுமாயின், அது நம்மில் மாம்சமாக விளங்கவேண்டும்” என்று E. ஸ்டேன்லி ஜோன்ஸ் என்பார் மொழிந்துள்ளார். ஒஸ்வால்ட் சேம்பர்ஸ் என்பார், ‘சரியானவற்றைச் சொல்லியும், அவற்றை என் வாழ்வில் நான் நடைமுறைப்படுத்தாவிடில், தேவனைப் பற்றி உண்மையற்றவற்றை நான் கூறுகிறவனாயிருப்பேன்” என்று உரைத்துள்ளார்.
உண்மையில், கர்த்தராகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்து ஒருவரே தாம் போதித்தவற்றிற்கு முற்றிலும் ஏற்றபடி நடந்து கொண்டார். அவருடைய செய்திக்கும் வாழ்விற்கும் அணுவளவும் முரண்பாடு இல்லை. யூதர்கள், ‘நீர் யார்?” என வினவினர். அதற்கு அவர், ‘ஆதி முதலாய் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறவர்தான் நான்” என்று விடை பகிர்ந்தார் (யோவான் 8:25). அவர் வலியுறுத்தியவற்றிற்கு அவரது நடத்தை உடன்பாடாயிருந்தது. நமது வாழ்விலும் அந்நிலை பெருக வேண்டும்.
டாக்டர் பட்டம் பெற்ற பிரபலமான பிரசங்கியார் ஒருவருக்கு மருத்துவத்தொழில் செய்யும் சகோதரர் இருந்தார். ஒருநாள் ஒரு பெண்மணி அந்தப் பிரசங்கியாரின் வீட்டின் வாசலில் பெயர்ப் பலகையைக் கண்டு அந்த இருவரில் யார் அங்கே வசிப்பது என்று அறியாது சற்றுக் குழப்பமடைந்தாள். வாசலின் அருகில் வந்து கதவைத் திறந்த பிரசங்கியாரிடம், ‘நீங்கள் பிரசங்கம் செய்யும் டாக்டரா? அல்லது பிராக்டீஸ் (வைத்தியம் செய்யும் ) டாக்டரா?” என்று அப்பெண்மணி வினாவினாள். அந்தக் கேள்வி பிரசங்கியாரைத் திடுக்கிடச் செய்தது. அன்றைய நாளில், சத்தியங்களைப் பிரசங்கிப்பதற்கும் மேலாக அவைகளைத் தன் வாழ்வில் கடைப்பிடிக்க (பிராக்டீஸ் செய்ய) வேண்டும் என்று தீர்மானித்தார்.

Wer den christlichen Glauben predigt und lehrt, sollte auch in die Tat umsetzen, was er predigt. Er sollte der Welt ein lebendiges Beispiel der Wahrheit geben. Es ist der Wille Gottes, dass das Wort im Leben der Seinen Gestalt annimmt.
Die Welt lässt sich durch Taten weit mehr beeindrucken als durch Worte. War es nicht Edgar Guest, der schrieb: »Ich würde lieber einmal eine Predigt sehen, als mir täglich eine anhören«? Und es gibt die bekannte Bemerkung: »Was du bist, redet so laut, dass ich nicht hören kann, was du sagst!«
Von einem Prediger wurde gesagt, dass, wenn er auf der Kanzel stand, die Menschen wollten, er würde sie nie verlassen; aber wenn er von der Kanzel herunter war, wünschten sie, er würde sie nie mehr betreten.
H.A. Ironside sagte: »Nichts verschließt die Lippen so sehr wie das Leben. « In ähnlichem Sinn schrieb Henry Drummond (1851-1897, schottischer Autor und Evangelist, Mitarbeiter Moodys): »Der Mann ist die Botschaft.« Carlyle (Thomas, 1795-1881, schottischer Autor) fügt sein Zeugnis hinzu: »Heiliges Leben ist das beste Argument für Gott in einem Zeitalter der Fakten … Worte haben Gewicht, wenn ein Mann hinter ihnen steht.« E. Stanley Jones sagte: »Das Wort muss Fleisch in uns werden, bevor es Kraft durch uns werden kann.« »Wenn ich das Richtige predige, es
aber nicht lebe, dann sage ich die Unwahrheit über Gott«, sagte Oswald Charnbers.
Natürlich wissen wir, dass der Herr Jesus der Einzige ist, der vollkommen verkörpert, was Er lehrt. Zwischen Seiner Botschaft und Seinem Leben gibt es absolut keinen Widerspruch. Als die Juden Ihn fragten: »Wer bist du?«, antwortete Er: »Durchaus das, was ich auch zu euch rede« (Johannes 8,25). Seine Lebensführung. war mit Seiner Verkündigung in völliger Übereinstimmung. Auch bei uns sollte es so sein, dass beide Dinge mehr und mehr dahin kommen.
Zwei Brüder hatten Doktortitel, einer als Prediger und der andere als Arzt. Eines Tages kam eine von Sorgen geplagte Frau, um den Prediger zu besuchen, aber sie war sich nicht sicher, welcher der beiden Doktoren dort wohnte. Als der Prediger die Tür öffnete, fragte sie: »Sind Sie der Doktor, der predigt, oder der, der praktiziert?« Die Frage verdeutlichte ihm erneut die Notwendigkeit, ein lebendiges Beispiel dessen zu sein, was er lehrte.
