Cure for Envy
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long. For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cast off. (Proverbs 23:17-18)
When we see the wicked prosper we are apt to envy them. When we hear the noise of their mirth and our own spirit is heavy, we half think that they have the best of it. This is foolish and sinful. If we knew them better, and specially if we remembered their end, we should pity them.
The cure for envy lies in living under a constant sense of the divine presence, worshiping God and communing with Him all the day long, however long the day may seem. True religion lifts the soul into a higher region, where the judgment becomes more clear and the desires are more elevated. The more of heaven there is in our lives, the less of earth we shall covet. The fear of God casts out envy of men.
The deathblow of envy is a calm consideration of the future. The wealth and glory of the ungodly are a vain show. This pompous appearance flashes out for an hour and then is extinguished. What is the prosperous sinner the better for his prosperity when judgment overtakes him? As for the godly man, his end is peace and blessedness, and none can rob him of his joy; wherefore, let him forgo envy and be filled with sweet content.

பொறாமைக்கு மருந்து
உன் மனதைப் பாவிகள்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ளவிடாதே. நீ நாடேறும் கர்த்தரைப் பற்றும் பயத்தோடிரு, நிச்சயமாகவே முடிவு உண்டு. உன் நம்பிக்கை வீண்போகாது (நீதி.23:17-18).
துன்மார்க்கர் வாழ்வு வளமையுறும்போது நாம் அவர்கள்மேல் பொறாமை கொள்ளுகிறவர்களாய் இருக்கிறோம். நம் மனது துக்கத்தால் களைத்து இருக்கும்போது மகிழ்ச்சி பொங்கும் அவர்கள் சத்தத்தைக் கேட்டு, எல்லாம் அவர்கள் நன்மைக்கேதுவாக நடக்கிறது என்றுகூட நமக்கு நினைக்கத் தோன்றுகிறது. இது முட்டாள்தனமானதும் பாவமானதும் ஆகும். அவர்களைப்பற்றி நாம் நன்கு அறிந்திருந்தாலும் முக்கியமாக அவர்கள் முடிவை நினைத்துப் பார்த்தாலும் நாம் அவர்களுக்காகப் பரிதபிக்கவேண்டும்.
ஒருநாள் எவ்வளவு நீளமானதாகத் தோன்றினாலும் அந்த நாள் முழுவதும் கடவுளைத் தொழுதுகொண்டும், அவரோடு உரையாடிக்கொண்டும், அவர் சமூகம் எப்போதும் நம்மோடு இருக்கிறது என்ற உணர்வோடு இருப்பதுமே பொறாமைக்குத் தகுந்த மருந்தாகும். உண்மையான கடவுள் பக்தி நீதி நியாயம் தெளிவாய்த் தெரிவதும், ஆசைகள் மேம்பட்டதாய் இருப்பதுமான உயர்நிலைக்கு ஆன்மாவை உயர்த்துகிறது. நம்மில் எவ்வளவுக்கெவ்வளவு மோட்சத்தைப்பற்றிய எண்ணம் இருக்கிறதோ அவ்வளவுக்கவ்வளவு குறைவாக உலகத்துக்குரியவைகள்மேல் நாட்டம் கொள்வோம். கடவுள்மேல் உள்ள பயம் மனிதர்மேல் உள்ள பொறாமையைப் போக்கிவிடும்.
அமைதியுடன் எதிர்காலம்பற்றி ஆராய்தல் பொறாமையை அறவே நீக்கிவிடும். கடவுள் பயம் அற்றவர்களின் செல்வமும் சிறப்பும் பயன் அற்றவை ஆகும். செல்வச் சிறப்பு வாய்ந்த பாவிக்கு நியாயத்தீர்ப்பின்போது அவன் செல்வத்தினால் பயன் என்ன? ஆனால் கடவுளுக்குப் பயன் என்ன? ஆனால் கடவுளுக்குப் பயப்படும் மனிதனின் முடிவு சமாதானமானதும் பாக்கியமானதும் ஆகும். அவனிடமிருந்து யாரும் அவன் மகிழ்ச்சியைப் பறித்துக்கொள்ள முடியாது. ஆகையால் அவன் பொறமையைவிட்டு இனிய திருப்தி உள்ளவானய் இருப்பானாக.

„Lass dein Herz nicht neidisch sein auf die Sünder, sondern sei den ganzen Tag lang in der Furcht des Herrn. Denn sicher ist ein Ende da, und dein Warten wird nicht trügen.“ Spr. 23, 17. 18.
Wenn wir die Gottlosen glücklich sehen, so sind wir geneigt, sie zu beneiden. Wenn ihre geräuschvolle Fröhlichkeit uns zu Ohren dringt und unser eigenes Herz schwer ist, so denken wir halbwegs, dass sie besser daran seien als wir. Dies ist töricht und sündlich. Wenn wir sie besser kennen würden und besonders, wenn wir an ihr Ende denken würden, sollten sie uns leid tun.
Das Gegenmittel gegen den Neid liegt darin, dass wir in einem beständigen Gefühl der göttlichen Gegenwart leben, Gott verehren und Gemeinschaft mit Ihm haben den ganzen Tag lang, wie lang der Tag auch scheinen mag. Wahre Religion hebt die Seele in eine höhere Region empor, wo das Urteil klarer wird und die Wünsche erhabener. Je mehr in unserem Leben vom Himmel ist, desto weniger werden wir von der Erde begehren. Die Furcht Gottes treibt den Neid gegen Menschen aus.
Der Todesstreich des Neides ist eine ruhige Betrachtung der Zukunft. Der Reichtum und die Ehre der Gottlosen sind eitles Gepränge. Dieser pomphafte Schein funkelt eine Stunde lang und erlischt alsdann. Ist der wohlhabende Sünder um seines Wohlergehens willen besser daran, wenn das Gericht ihn ereilt? Das Ende des Gottesfürchtigen ist Friede und Seligkeit, und niemand kann ihm seine Freude rauben; möge er deshalb den Neid fahren lassen und voll ruhiger Zufriedenheit sein.
